Cheers for the sailors that fought on the wave for it,

Cheers for the soldiers that always were brave for it,
Tears for the men that went down to the grave for it,
Here comes the flag!
~Arthur Macy, The Flag

I am proud to say that I grew up as the ONLY CHILD (ok so now you are thinking spoiled.) of a career military man. He was the single most important influence in my life. He was 6’4″ tall with the strength of 10 men and the softness of spirit of an angel. This picture (sorry about the poor quality) is of his burial flag. It sits on a high ledge of a bookcase in our new home. I look at it every day. This is what a soldier on bended knee said to me when he placed the flag and three of the gun shells from my fathers 21 gun salute into my hands.

“On behalf of the President of the United States, a grateful nation, this flag is presented as a token of our appreciation for the honorable and faithful service rendered by your father to his country and the United States Air Force”.

No, thank God my father did not die in service to his country… HE LIVED IN SERVICE TO HIS COUNTRY!

Happy Memorial Day EVERYONE. I have so much to blog about (salsa and sewing room as promised) …but this one is just for DADDY.
