Book Club Night!

It ain’t all about the sewing my friends. Reading is the ultimate relaxation and escape. Book club at my house last night. My turn to choose the book and make our evening meal. Candle light, summer salad plate (kinda lunchy dinner) great friends who have known each other forever, raise our families together and now we are enjoying, dare I say… mid life together.

I chose the book The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian for us to read. I had read Midwives another book by Mr. Bohjalian a few years ago and enjoyed it very much.(it was an Oprah book clup choice).  Also, the author just happens to be the nephew of my good friend Karin!


We all enjoyed the book. We decided it was a bit sad and definately “haunting”. If you are a “reader” you might like to give it a GO!


It has been rainy, hot and humid here in Hotlanta so I decided on a salad plate for dinner. Everyone grabed their plate and headed to the dinning room table. We ate our salads along with the Sangria I had made and had the best evening!! I JUST LOVE BOOK CLUB. (especially when I get to do the cookin!). Here is the Sangrai recipe. Makes a 1 2/3 gallons so you can make the stuff and have it in the fridge ready for those hot summer nights! You won’t regret it.


(a Southern Living recipe from long ago!)

 1 gallon Burgundy

1 Quart Orange Juice

2 cups cherry or peach brandy (I like cherry)

1 quart Sprite 

1/3 cup lime or lemon juice (fresh squeezed of course)

Lemon slices

Lime slices

Orange slices

You can throw strawberrys, kiwi, blueberries or whatever fruit makes you happy in the mix!

Combine first 5 ingredients in a large punch bowl, stir gently. Garninsh with fruit slices. Server over ice. Yields about 1 2/3 gallons. 

Sangia is better if allowed to blend in refrigerator for about 24 hours before serving.

Trust me, would I lie to you?

*** Special Note: I like to add the sprite at the time of serving this puts a little fizz in the Sangria!!!
